Positive Ideas: Simple and Clear

by Anshuman Goenka

A few friends and correspondents to this blog have asked us to write something clear, definite and positive that the BJP or the NDA would do when voted to power.

As an avid supporter, but yet an unregistered member, I or other Friends of BJP can make no commitments. But I know one trustworthy senior politician somebody who can: LK Advani. There are five personal promises he makes to each of us. In five simple bullets these are:

  1. Education for all, increased capacity with opening up of higher education, more vocational education and financial aid to complete education
  2. Enhanced employment opportunities in new sectors and work in public life to improve policies and institutions, esp with a focus on non-farm employment in rural India
  3. Security to pursue our lives and ambitions: no compromise, tougher laws, firm implementation
  4. A green and clean India: Accountable, clear plans on environment and conservation
  5. Rural prosperity & urban renewal, more cities, beautiful cities, enforced property rights, better municipal governance

When I saw this, I thought this was minimalist. Surely, this did not include many other things that I am sure the BJP would talk about in its manifesto, say on foreign policy or other aspects of India’s economy. Indeed any Government or PM will attend to many other matters and both the party manifesto and the NDA’s common program will make references to these areas. In fact, we are soliciting ideas & inputs from Friends of BJP, including specific recommendations and measurable outcomes.

But this is what I think is also commendable. It brings out real priorities, suggests that the government will focus on things that are feasible. It will not be everything nice to everybody, and probably it should not be. The move from traditional comprehensive platitudes to a clearer focus and sincerity is commendable. I also find a personal promise from the aspirant to the highest office of government quite unique and laudable.

In a career as a management consultant, investment banker and PE professional, one has met impressive individuals who one knows will stop at nothing to deliver on the commitments they have conviction on. Last week, two Friends of the BJP were invited by Mr Advani to his home. As one of them, I can assure you in my personal or professional life I have anybody whose sincerity or determination I would trust more.

Hi, is there a facebook page for Friends of BJP??

  2. anand on February 25th, 2009 9:32 pm

    the promises are too generic

  3. Bengal Voice on February 25th, 2009 10:02 pm

Very lucid thoughts !!! I couldn’t agree more.

I think there is a tendency in BJP to maintain an image of being fair to all.It is their pipe dream that minorities will vote for them. The only way BJP will gain substantially is by polarising the Hindu votes.Do not depend on allies who are fence sitters.Give them an ultimatum to tow the BJP line or leave.Polarise Hindu votes in the states ruled by BJP by announcing special schemes for Hindus like first claim on temple funds, provide low interest loans to Hindu entrepreneurs, students etc on the same lines as minority appeasement policies.Make Hindus feel important. Pseudo sickularists will beat their chests.Show them to the hindus. This way build a committed vote bank.
There will be no gains without halwa as shown by the UPA in placating muslims.

  5. karishma on February 26th, 2009 1:51 am

i like the simple nature of these thoughts, although, i’ve heard these promises from countless politicians right before elections. what will be different this time around? Also, is LK Advani really the right leader to lead the new, vibrant and young india that we have before us?

  6. Y.rama krishna Reddy on February 26th, 2009 7:23 am

Yes its really thanks to this site.

  7. Mohit R on February 26th, 2009 3:12 pm

    @ Karishma
Is LK Advani the right leader? This has to be seen in the context of the situation. Looking at the options I will definitely side with LK Advani rather than a Mayawati, a Sharad Pawar or some nobody from the Third Front.

Dr Manmohan Singh seems like an alternative but there are serious questions about how long he will continue in office with Rahul Gandhi as an aspiring PM-to-be. As for Rahul Gandhi, youth and a family name shouldn’t be the only criteria for leading the country. And he has yet to display any sort of capability or vision required to lead India.

LK Advani, despite his age, is fairly current and it seems like he is also open to new ideas & change. Moreover, his vision and leadership skills make him the best bet for the current elections.

  8. Suresh Raisinghani on February 26th, 2009 7:09 pm

I agree with the above assessment.

  9. Amit Srivastava on February 26th, 2009 11:17 pm

I agree with anand and karishma above that the promises are too generic and vague. These promises cannot be measured once they get into power. Can I expect specific numbers and precise rules/laws that he would want to implement. And also whether those promises are unquestionable or will those be on negotiating table with allies. I hate it when these parties ditch their core promise in the name of “Common Minimum Program”.

  10. madan on February 26th, 2009 11:32 pm

why are u favouring mr advani who always talks about ram mandir…..he always try to discriminate between hindu and muslims…so i think the bulletin like mr anshuman goenka has said contains five points..that is not much important because promises and doings are two different things….

  11. madan on February 26th, 2009 11:40 pm

and one thing more i would like to add that every politician now a days is running behind the chair so it doesn’t matter which party comes into force…in bjp i liked the term of Mr vajpayee because of whome we are seeing the four lane gt road and in congress i like both chitambaram and sardarji both are good politicians atleast educated enough to understand the problems….and about this site i would like to say that this is just a bjp campaning and only these friends Amit Malviya
    Anshuman Goenka
    GVL Narasimha Rao
    Maneck Davar
    Rajesh Jain
    RK Misra
    Sudheendra Kulkarni

CONGRESS IS THE BEST AND THEY WILL SURELY WIN THE ELECTION 2009.

  14. Bengal Voice on February 28th, 2009 4:54 am

    I will vote BJP because….

Friends, Indians, Countrymen… let us give a chance to BJP one more time with convincing majority (at least 275 seats) for the folloing reasons.

    1. The technological advancement that India saw in BJP’s tenure of 5 years(1999-2004) is simply spectacular compared to the earlier 50 years of misrule by Nehru-Gandhi kingdom.
    2. These technological opportunities created more and more rural/urban employment opportunities without which today a country of over a billion population would have been just like Somalia - ridden with debt .
    3. It disturbs me and I hope every Indian with the spate of terrorist activities that took over the last 4-5 years. No cities were spared..Delhi, Mumbai, Varanasi, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Jaipur, Guwahati, Benaras, Ramgarh, Jammu, Srinagar, Ahmedabad, Surat, and few of these listed had multiple incidents of terrorists attacks.. The thing that is really disburbing is the ease and the relative regularity with which the terrorists struck.

There are a hundred more reasons which can be listed for the failure of the UPA govt.

Let us give BJP one more chance!!!

    * Appoint one or more volunteer teams from IIM/IIT types, for each constituency for all 545.

    * Strategize an efficient media management algorithms and scenarios for all the weeks before elections. This is very much required and crucial, as the media might be planning something big before the voting dates to bring in a hate-bjp wave.

    * Terror or minority appeasement are indeed good and effective poll planks. Dont get fooled by media’s diversion signboards.

BJP is still considered as a party of Urban, rich and middle class people and party with conservative approach in various social aspect.

BJP must now gear up to change its image and perception and must start projecting as party of and for every Indian!!

Party failed to muster strong suport and base in many parts of india and continuous improvement process in various parts of india will make BJP a true national party and rather depending on various regional / local parties, it can make it’s own base.

India needs truely single Party to rule and BJP, may not now and immediately, but can definitely emerge as National Party in its true sense.

  20. Kiran on March 1st, 2009 11:06 pm

Bringing back BJP to power is our moral responsibility. Lets try to convince anyone and everyone around us to vote for BJP with rational reasons. Let’s vow to bring back BJP at centre in 2009! Jai Sri Ram!

    @kiran
u hv listed 17 achievements of UPA. in actual manner these all r the basic needs of an nation. it is the responsibilty of every ruling party to perform them…… every one says india is known by her secularism . but every party make the religion as election agenda to come in power
bjp fights for hindus…and congress provides facilities to muslim… and mayawati agenda is dalits these politicians has divide our nation on caste and communal lines… what this hell is going on…. tell me is this india of our next generation…. simply criticizing the deeds or by comparing the ruler parties we never get the true solution…. it is the time to take actions not just making mere promises and talks…
ONE THING MORE I WANT TO ADD….
the attacks on 26/11 unites all the indain. where was the unity or brotherhood before that ….in mumbai there was differneces between marathis and northerns…..
i think terrorist has done well to give a lesson to the fools…… is it so…

There has to be a body like TRAI who will control the infrastructure development.Across all our cities I could not find a single city to settle down. Pollution, traffic poor roads, chaos is a part of every Indians life.population is crossing 2 crores and there is no plans how to serve this much of people. You talk about poverty alleviation… believe me this is not possible at all until the population is controlled.

Hi, Its really nice visitng the Friendsof bjp.com. I do believe in the ideology of BJP but to be very frank over the years the party has lost lost its discipline and ieology for which it was known as “party with difference”. I have some suggession for the party.

    1. Focus only on those issues which is related to common man. Ram Temple is important but there are so many things which is more important 2. Don’t go for alliance for short term gain. allinace with BSP in UP was the start of downfall of the party from UP. 3. Senior leaders should respect each other. Co-operation among the senior leaders is need of the time.
    4. Party should try to contest on as many seats possible to spread its ideology. This way party can increase its supportbase in Andhra, WB, kerla and TN.

Will keep posted my views time to time

    Thanks,
    Vinay

    a. Provide 33% seats to young female of which 50% are young and educated
    b. Provide 25% seats to young educated male especially in the villages (belonging to the same locality) who has vision and show definite growth in the future
    c. Promise on Linking of Rivers at national level and improve irrigation facilities
    d. Definite growth plans to farmers alternative ways during natural calamities
    e. Free Education to all the childrens upto Class 10 who are below the poverty line
    f. E Governance as will ensure timely and trouble free govt formalities and approvals to common public and transperancy in govt functions. This will also help in development of second level cities
    g. Law to prohibit unwanted freebies as would ensure the money is spent on
    h. Unique Electronic Identity Card for all the citizens of India. This should capture the passport, voter ID, Driving Licenses, Tax Nos etc, which are used by every Govt and agencies to capture the transactions.

If Advani only promises that his government will get out of as many things it can then he has my vote. By this simple idea he will unleash the energy of people of India.
It is utopian but one can always dream.
