Rejuvenating the BJP
Ashok Malik writes in Hindustan Times:
For the BJP, there is no quick route out of the mess. A start can be made by insisting on a rigorous, transparent internal election to choose the next president. Let candidates tour the country, canvass among MPs and state units and sell their visions of the BJP. This will throw up a president who will, at the very least, have legitimacy and the moral authority to discipline, streamline and shape the party.
The alternative is to let a small cabal dictate a negotiated choice. As the experience of the past three years has shown, this is a recipe for intrigue and private sponsorship, not for rejuvenation.

Dear Freinds ,
I agree with Mr Malik views time has now come once again that BJP is a party with Difference and election of new party president is an golden opportunity . BJP leaders please dont get trapped into ” High Command Culture ” .
Let the democracy first begin at home .
Thanks & Regards
Ajay Tripathi
why is this site printing the anti-BJP english media links in here, unless it is being covertly run by anti-BJP folks.
One more liberal media person bashing the bjp…I would ask him to point at similar supposedly unbiased anaylysis of cong., at anytime??
Congress has very few things wrong within its IDEOLOGIES.
What is certainly worth changing is certain Congressmen, but then we have bad apples everywhere (rest assure they will be weeded out)!
BJP’s problem is the ideologies, get them right first!
An Obvious Congress Supporter!
This article is a waste has no substance. BJP is not confused about the ideology of Hindutva. It is merely the media presentation, see Rajnath Singh’s statement. Those who got frustrated by the defeat are suggesting the BJP to change the stance on Hindutva and soften it. BJP officially never said that party lost because of its ideology and it has to change that. Merely feelings and opinion of certain people dose not count. There is no mention of the kind of upgrade is needed of course the aim here is not to suggest BJP, but probably this guy has not compared the BJP and Congress manifesto. If they are compared and Presidents address to the newly elected parliament is considered then it becomes obvious that it is not BJP but congress needs an upgrade. The congress won circumstantially and reading too much in to it is futile. So suggesting BJP to transform and make ideational and generational change is totally garbage. I consider that BJP should change its strategies. He should consider about the Uma, Khurana, previous president cases where BJP expelled or removed them from the post considering indiscipline before talking about compromise and all. Congress can never dream of removing president from the post. Of course it is not good for the party when the important leaders are airing their view in public rather then party forum. But the writer himself has said that they are hypocrites. As far as BJPs stand on the Nuclear deal was concerned practically no one has any idea including this writer why BJP was opposing it. For the reference go to youtube and listen the recent speech by Sushma Swaraj given in LS and please don’t miss the small debate between her and Pranab Muukharji. Of course it was just a small part of the congress’s fool proven propaganda. In the current election media never highlighted the reason behind this opposition of the N-deal they kept on repeating that it is BJPs politics. Of course it might be but that was not the main reason. I don’t feel much should be written about this article–
Coolncrazy, well written comments. We shouldn’t forget the dubious role played by the media in the recent elections. Media has tricked the people in many ways showing the truth as false and false as truth. There are inumerable instances where it behaved like this. Simple case is Varun Gandhi’s speech. Instead of broadcasting the entire speech it picked up few sections of it and made him a villain. Also, the Media demonized BJP at every instance. In one show on NDTV, the Vir Sanghvi was praising congress party and cornered BJP partymen as thugs . Is this true ?. Prannoy Roy was giving extra importance to Sonia saying that whereever she went in U.P, people were coming in hoards and using odd ways to get her attention. Even we noticed these things with Narendra Modi. Modi was never given a good publicity. Media is unnecessarily cornering BJP on its ideology. The problem is not with the ideology but with certain leaders within the party who is giving importance to their egos rather than working together. In case of Vasundhara and Jaswanth one wonders why they couldn’t hold Rajasthan or deliver it like how Gujarat and M.P retained the seats.
CoolnCrazy, Sushama Swaraj’s reply was not only lame it was second grade politics.
It was Vajpayee who proclaimed the moratorium for NOTHING.
Congress just used the BJP’s mistake to get something out of it.
If left for Congress we woud have had the N-Deal with NO MORATORIUM promised.
BJP created the Moratorium mess Congress just salvaged a good deal on top of it!
Vai
Except Modi, every body in BJP looks like underestimated congress. Never underestimate your apponent. Congress had declared that BJP is their number one enemy just before the elections and painted BJP as communal. There was no defense strategy from BJP on this attack. BJP needs to do some hardwork and come up with workable tactics to attack congress and defeat it in the elections.
I am not sure how the reply can be termed as lame and second grade politics, but the choice is yours. The point is that Vajpeyee proclaimed the moratorium it did not have any legal binding on India. It was just a strategic declaration to calm down the international pressure/reaction. The present UPA government made it in to a legal binding. So the mistake was not on the part of BJP/NDA it is in the part of UPA and MMS. APJ commented that in the state of “Supreme National Interest” the “Voluntary Moratorium” could be revoked. But now it has become a legal binding after signing the agreement. I can not comment on what congress could have done because we are seeing what congress/UPA did. It holds no weight saying that “Agar meri Chachi mard hoti to use chacha kehta” (from one of the Siddhuism).
Apart from this what I was pointing out is that Mr. Malik’s comment that “Indo-US” nuclear deal was one of the causes to turn BJPs election fortune which I disagreed on the terms that it had little or no impact as an issue.
Coolncrazy, good comments from you once again. One question that is coming to my mind is related to the election of the leader. L.K.Advani is definitely a seniour leader however, his choice as the PM in waiting is not well received by Indian public. Also, was his leadership endorsed by all his party men. Some body throwed a slipper at him in M.P. This shows that there are some loop holes in the way BJP is electing its leader. BJP mut be extremely cautious on electing the president and people in High positions who are leading the party. I would say , Internal democracy is most important and it should be done in a transparent way to avoid confusion and choas within the party. I don’t see a big issue in electing a leader . Some how , I feel the party is not going in the right direction when it comes to electing their leaders. Rajnath Singh as a party president is a catastrophy. He failed to deliver U.P and still continues to be the president. His dictator style functioning will not yield any results . Internal democracy should be given top priority in electing its leader.
Thanks dear skg, Yea you are correct to a certain extent regarding LKA is concerned. Many people (I may be generalizing it but) didn’t like LKA as PM for the simple reason that he was not able to come out of the image that was created for him as a hardliner. Moreover, remarks LKA made against MMS during the election (which of course was not personal rather as PM and was misplaced by media) went against him. I believe that many people felt it was unnecessary it reduced the stature of LKA. Though he was right about MMS. Vajpayee usually never commented or attacked personally. That gave him a pan Indian appeal and many people admired him. Like LKA similar thing is happening for Modi. He should be cautious to make any personal remarks. He might win Gujarat where people have seen his work but might not help in the areas where people have not seen his work.
I feel that the party president should now be some Dalit preferably from AP (south) and young and dynamic. If not available the make leaders. The choice of the leader in LS is obviously Mrs. Swaraj because no one has that much appealing and clean image without much controversy. All other leaders have desire but no one can match Mrs. Swaraj in image, appeal and dynamic oratory skill. As far as UP is concerned play all local cards to get the base correct. UP is a state which has diverse balance in each constituency and focus on each constituency. Do not project any thing right now for entire UP, because it is fractured in many ways. Once you have numbers then project the leader. But of course as you suggested being a cadre based party the internal democracy is a must. I somehow believe that most of the party positions are hold by the people who are faithful to RSS. Though RSS works on the ground but has no mass appeal. BJP should start electing its leaders from the district level take a bottom-up approach.
On the lighter note I believe BJP leaders should stop writing books for now because they are not sure that which part may create controversy in future.
According to me the BJP,in the process of rejuvenating itself, should not forget the hindutva ideology at any cost, else it’ll stand to lose it’s core support group. But at the same time, some of it’s leaders should understand that,in these times, when there is agression at display all over the world,by the religious extremists of a particular community, they should avoid portraying the hindu community as an aggressive one.Instead they should focus on issues like the caste system, whish has plagued our religion, for a long time now,and look forward to eliminate it,and thus benefit the hindu religion in a huge way. They should expose the caste based divisive politics of politicians like Ms Mayawati.
I am a hardcore and loyal supporter of the BJP,and I believe that it’s the only party which fights for the interest of the hindus, which it should keep doing. But should show aggression only in the issues where it matters, and not just for votes. At the same time,I forewarn u,not to forget developement, and related issues at any cost,or even the hindus would distance themselves frm u.
I think if BJP can replicate Gujarat’s success formula in all of its ruling states and nation wide it has good chances of coming back in 2014. The only think they should be careful with are minorities. Minorities , especially muslims and christians need to be dealt carefully. There is a trend that these groups are not voting for BJP as the aggressive Pro-Hindutva stand of the party antogonizes them. It is a very tough call. BJP needs to clearly come up with a strategy to deal with minorities. Congress is totally exploiting this 25% minorities to come back to power successfully along with pro-farmer , pro-student and pro-employee schems .
