BJP needs to Put it’s House in Order & Do It Fast!

by RK Misra

Though these are still early days but UPA (which essentially means Congress) is seemingly doing better on policy and governance front than most expected, after securing better than expected electoral mandate in May elections.

There seem to be a resolve on part of the Congress to convert this still uncertain and short of majority electoral mandate to a secure majority in 2014 by delivering on good governance and inclusive growth & development agenda. This is a well thought out plan leading to a winning electoral strategy as it appeals to both educated urban middle class (good governance & reforms) as well as rural masses (social welfare and inclusive growth).

UPA (Congress) has been very systematic and consistent about this agenda and have made their intentions known, first by way of Presidential Address and yesterday through Economic Survey report. A follow-up of this strategy and developmental agenda by way of budget provisions is expected on 6th.

I, as a citizen, am happy about it as no one can fault and argue with this approach as this is the best possible development model for India, provided they deliver on their intentions and promises given that delivery systems are in shambles and leaky.

Now coming to the political ramifications of success of this agenda. Some of my friends in Congress are so confident of their strategy (a BJP in disarray is a bonus) that they have been talking about return of pre-1977 days when Congress ruled for decades without a break.

Tome met this does not sound too good given that Congress did not do a good job of economic and social development during first 3 decades post independence. The reason for this poor performance could lie in the absence of a credible opposition and fear of loosing an election.

A credible opposition is as important as a good government to ensure that enough checks and balances are there. We all are witness to a lackluster performance of Rajiv Gandhi government despite having 3/4th majority.

Current state of affairs in BJP, though disheartening, is not unexpected. Every defeat results in heart-burns and finger pointing but this needs to come an end soon. A strong and united BJP will provided much needed checks & balances and should play the role of a constructive opposition to build it’s credibility among Indian electorate if they expect to have a fighting chance of coming back to power ever again.

A Right-of-Center political formulation led by BJP will be in the best interest of the country and for the Congress too, as Congress would prefer to deal with the predictable opposition (BJP), rather than deal with the mercurial left led by unelectable comrades and regional satraps who are completely oblivious of economic and social developmental challenges facing the nation.

Let’s all wish us luck and hope that BJP puts its house in order and does it fast!!

Very correct. In fact Congress strategy will work because India is in high growth phase and hence generates enough revenues to fund social programs.

Now the chances of BJP coming to power in the near future has pretty much vanished. In 2014, in my opinion BJP would be fighting to get even 100 seats.

So what should be BJP strategy. BJP’s strategy would be to hold to what it has and be a credible opposition party. The Congress upsurge will continue for some time 10,15 ,20 years, who knows.

BJP has to be ready when the time comes. They waited 45 years or so to come to power for the first time. Hence they have to be ready for a long drawn out struggle against the dynasty. Hence BJP has to give up pretensions of being a Congress alternative and work hard to keep the base it has.

How can it do that? It has to support genuine mass leaders at every level. The inefficiency in the BJP that was accumulated when it was winning just by its brand name needs to go. In fact all the recent victories of the BJP in the states have been because of strong state leaders who have won inspite of bot so good reputation of the BJP. For example Narendra Modi, Shivraj Chauhan, Raman Singh, Yedyuarappa.

Also, RSS has to evolve so that it can attract young and people with modern mindsets. For example, there are Hindus who may not be very religious but would support RSS because they are patriotic towards their civilization.

Having said all this, it is extremely painful to see how BJP has frittered away the golden chance it got to be the number one political party in India. They gave away 2004 and now 2009 is a disaster. In any case, enough of whining and crying BJP has to be fighting fit and continue the long struggle.

    very right said
BJP has to move into the grass root level. It has to show its presence in each and every election from top to bottom.

it must enter from taluka level to village level
by increasing its loyal members, they may be from RSS, ABVP, VHP or village or religious leaders of any religion Who are ready to devote some time and energy and solve various problems with in the village or with the help of the government bodies.
help in the development of each and every village.
No body in the village should die of hunger. It is pity to hear that some people in town, or village have died of hunger even when our religious houses are getting big donations.

the village help group should help them or take the help of other seniour group so that minimmum requirement of the family is fullfilled.

we must also take care that no women of any religion is abused physically or mentaly .

There must also be a body to see that the elected government are saving the rights of people in a democretic way .

BJP along with VHP has to see that Indians in different part of the world are safe.

Countries who had been a part of Bharat / hindusm should also be taken care of.

    It takes time,
BJP has got an apportunity to rebuild itself. to prove itself in national and International arena that it is only Hindusm/Brother hood that has given India its glory. Those who try to disturb this relation are also brought to justice & punished.

Definately it will lead the country from 2014 onwords

I strongly disagree with the opinion of this writer. Congress will lose in 2014 if it gives good governance. That is what happenend to NDA and that is what happenned to Krishna in Karnataka and Naidu in Andhra. Indian people do not want their country to go forward. They want to live in backwardness forever.

  8. observer on July 6th, 2009 11:12 pm

I do not agree on any of the theories of electoral results based on good governance or bad governance. Elections can be won in idia with the help of EVMs and lots of money to give to media. good governance or not it does not matter. all a government has to do is to feed the media to have their incompetence under the radar so that all the so called “intellectuals” in this country will be busy discussing statues and stuffs and to have an enjoyable intellectual masturbation sessions on TV or in front of it(including the kulkarnis and guptas of the bjp), and as you should know now which is of no consequence… of no consequence to the “comman man” but tremendously profitable to the one sitting in the government whose strategy hits right on top of the nail. No wonder how the British, gandhis ruled the indians for so long… lol … they are the ones who are the most genuinely intelligent… hats off to them…

Let us Look at what we need to do to veer around BJP ruled states to get on with good governance…that would align with doing something to show that it is not the centre / congress that can do the Aam Admi uplift…There are ways for BJP to demonstrate in earnest an inclusive agenda, to manage the uplift of the so many divided communities to converge towards a Hindustan. Karnataka has the richest BJP government..and it could be the starting point….better still would ofcourse be a simultaneous launch across all BJP states…

One poignant thought that came out of BJP “Chintan” was that it needs to prove inclusive Governance in the states that it governs today. One way to move on this would be to have similar program launched in all BJP Governed states on one or more of the following lines:

    1) mini ITI for Muslim women where they are given training on Textiles, dress designing, printing, slight twisting of the arms of dress designers for the syllabus may be needed… inaugerated by Madam Najma Haptullah, in the presence of Shahnawaz Hussain and the respective CM…may be a few more of the young turks of BJP like Rajiv P. Rudy

    2) Automobile Diploma for the BPL, or less educated Muslim youths who just go over to driving Auto rickshaws or repairing 2 wheelers all their lives, with arrangements of syllabus defined by Auto manufacturers in BJP states, Land could be taken from Wakf board on lease…and some infrastructure given by state government, use local BJP MLA / MPs from the community to influence

    3) Forcing the hands of Big Hindu Temple managements to provide Health Care facilities to BPL Hindu families by adopting one or more Hospitals in the Rural districts, networking them with Big hospitals—using compulsory service of MS/MBBS interns, Baba Namdev and Sri Sri could be roped in to cause the influence

    4) Proving to tribals that Progress and Education is not targetted at eroding their culture or traditions. UCT programmes worldwide have proven it in USA, Australia and Canada…they now use Internet to educate themselves when they have time or feel like, and ofcurse communicate by emails…(keeping mind Jharkhand and similar populations in Assam, Orissa, Uttarakhand …)

There are many more such vectors of effort possible…

The Key success Factors require the selection of self-less/ dedicated owners for each of these drives, taken from the target community, who have an inclusive vision and are educated…

RKM, do you think it is doable in Karnataka…?

So many excellent comments. Innovative and workable ideas are comming from the bloggers. Hope the BJP central leadership is incorporating these ideas.
Next things for BJP is to capture power in A.P. This is absolute must to atleast take a revenge on Congress in 2014. I still don’t see a strong leader for A.P. Without A.P it will be another 2009 for BJP in 2014. A.P and Karnataka can deliver Power to BJP in Delhi easily.

Observer, your comment on Britishers and Gandhis is excellent. Why is RSS the guiding organization to the BJP is not talking or taking steps to help its child. It looks like RSS is not really doing much to help BJP. This is a very dangerous trend. Is RSS learning from the mistakes ?.

Sad to note BJP is standing mute even after so many friends sincerely asking them to comeback to form. I havent really seen any signal, that shows we are on the right track. No policies, except not talking to the media by all. No movement elsewhere, no indications of revival in Maharashthra which is going for election soon.

    Dear Friends ,

It’s not the end , there is always silver lining to dark cloud.

No one had expected BJP after 1984 elections to rise and lead government on the other hand Congress lost the initiative.

one thing is now clear , Good Governance and Winning Elections are two different trades / skills .

Both Naidu and S.M Krishna and Atalji had not lost if good governance was the criteria.

BJP needs to first put its house inorder , organization , and leadership and then “COMBAT”

    Regards,
    Ajay Tripathi

Is BJP central leadership really looking into this website ?. If they are not looking at this website, is there any other way we can bring some excellent suggestions that are coming on this website to their notice. Notice this website if founded by some IIT chaps and it will be a handy tool for BJP if they take it seriously. Some of the readers are well educated and can very well give excellent guidance to the BJP leaders and the parliamentary board . Just like how congress copied the west in recruiting the best brains like Tata and Infosys, BJP should give chance to seriously intelligent people who would help it strategise, implement and correct the party .
