Action Ideas: What You Can Do This Election To Make A Difference
In the midst of this election season (and the multiple challenges that India faces), many of us would like to do something. You have told us this at the various Friends of BJP meetings that we have organised and in the hundreds of emails that we have received. So, here are some specific suggestions on what you can do this election:
- Host Drawing Room Conversations
- Visit the Friends of BJP website daily, forward articles to friends, and comment on them
- Write Articles for our Website (send them to info@friendsofbjp.org)
- Get sign-ups for SMS/Email so you can stay connected [sms 4BJP to 575758 (for Indian mobile users); send a blank email to sub@friendsofbjp.org]
- Forward Messages (emails, SMS) to Friends
- Join our Facebook, Orkut groups, and Twitter channel
- Understand the Election Process better (read these notes by Gaurang Damani: Part 1, Part 2)
- Meet People 1:1 to Canvas for BJP (you may need to meet the local BJP/NDA candidate campaign team to co-ordinate this better)
- Attend local BJP/NDA Rallies
- Make sure you and everyone of your family and friends who is eligible to vote actually VOTES on polling day
Action Idea: Host Drawing Room Conversations
This election is an opportunity to change the course of India. Many among us have realised that the politics of the past cannot create the foundation for the democracy of the future. Now, each of us can act and be part of the process of change. This is our opportunity to Lead. Our silence will not be heard by anyone. We need to be vocal in our support for the BJP (and NDA), and help persuade the undecideds to support the BJP.
To help spread the message about the BJP to a large number of people, there is something which each one of us can do: host Drawing Room Conversations. These meetings with 5-20 people can be done anywhere — at home, in coffee shops, in offices, in parks. Start a dialogue with people on why the BJP is the better option in this election. (And of course, encourage people to vote on polling day).
What can you do in a Drawing Room Conversation?
- Share the document: “Why We Support the BJP - Because India Deserves Better“
- Play the videos and presentation from Friends of BJP
- Talk about Why Middle India Matters, and what matters to Urban Voters
- Use Talking Points from our Why BJP presentation
- Play videos of BJP’s Ads
- Highlights points from the BJP Manifesto (presentation) and IT Vision
- Discuss the achievements (and failures) of the two previous governments (NDA from 1998 to 2004, and UPA from 2004 to 2009)
- Ask people to view one of the Arun Jaitley videos: English, Hindi
- Address the negative perceptions (if any) about the BJP by pointing people to the Friends of BJP website
- Ask everyone to fill in the Feedback Form, which you can send to us at the following address: Friends of BJP, 402 Peninsula Chambers, Peninsula Corp. Park, GK Marg, Lower Parel (W), Mumbai-400 013.
- Get specific feedback about the BJP which you can email us at info@friendsofbjp.org.
- Ask everyone to sms 4BJP to 575758 (for Indian mobile users) so they can stay connected
- Ask them to join our Facebook, Orkut groups, and Twitter channel
- If people are interested to do more, ask them to fill in the Volunteer Form on the Friends of BJP website
- Remind people to vote!
- Finally, leave a comment on this post every time you do a meeting - telling us about the meeting (date, time location; how many people attended; what were they key issues discussed)
Here is a tip. There are three types of people you will encounter — those who already support the BJP, those who will not support the BJP under any circumstance, and those who haven’t decided (and probably have an open mind). For the first group, ask them to lead Drawing Room Conversations. The second group can be ignored for now. The third group is whom you should invite for the meetings and convince them about the BJP.
So, let’s get going! This is an Election where each of us can make a difference — and put India back on the right track.
Here are some more ideas from RP Singh from Mumbai, who has been organising such meetings in parks:
- Rope in housing societies through local BJP corporator or socially active non-BJP person of acquaintance.
- Tap own contacts or team contacts to identify 25 representatives who can run the small group meeting simultaneously in various parts of the city.
- Create a standard presentation(deck) for convener of this meeting to make 25 printed copies or use projector if available.
- Encourage people to at least vote and then stress on BJP as better alternative.
- Focus on development, security and governance with examples of Gujarat, Chattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and NHA (National Highways) project.
- Create a feedback form to seek participant’s opinion( which creates feeling of “my opinion matters”).
- Conduct these meetings on Saturday and Sundays in multiple time slots and during evenings on weekdays.
- Create cloth banner of “Friends of BJP” as backdrop of these meetings.
- Try and get some known or locally respectable person to lead such meetings.

Some additional suggestions from RK Misra:
We would request each of you to organize small group meetings of 20-30 people at a place of your convenience, your home could be ideal. These could be your friends, colleagues, residential community members, members of your professional association (CAs, Doctors, Lawyers, Industry, Rotary, Lions etc.) and meeting could happen over a drink, tea/coffee, dinner or lunch.
Friends, we educated and successful professionals may not need politics and politicians in our daily lives as we do not need a ration card or subsidized kerosene, but our jobs, industries and most importantly future of our kids depend on policies and politics of this nation.
Hence Thinking Class engaging with the Political Class is a better way to ensure that country stays on the right course.

Friends of BJP Presentation
At Friends of BJP events, we make a three-part presentation. We welcome you to use these elements for your own Friends of BJP Drawing Room Conversations.
We start with a video on the state of India today. This is what galvanised us into action.
We then talk about how the Friends of BJP was formed, why we support the BJP, what our objectives, and what we are doing - and what each of you can do.
We end with a video of a strong, prosperous India.
Political Internship - Real Experience of Election Campaign
We the Friends of BJP are exploring the possibility of providing a Real World opportunity to experience Indian Elections to our Young & Educated professionals who have political aspirations or just keen to participate in this Festival of Democracy to engage and enjoy ground level experience of election management and campaigning.
We have spoken to some of our candidates who are contesting LS elections and found positive response. They are willing to take few of our recommendations and induct them in their campaign team for next 2-3 weeks. Of course this is a full time 24×7 commitment till elections are over. So you need to be really serious and committed to the cause and will have to take time off from your work or profession till elections are over.
We need to know your details - Name, Qualification, Profession, Location, LS Constituency Name, Name/Contact of BJP candidate (if you know it will be faster). Also few lines on why you want to engage and what contribution you will be able to make/willing to make.
To make things simple and fast please suggest which of the following will be your area of competence and why do you feel that you are best suited for this role -
1. Work on back-end campaign using data analysis, e-mailing or sms
2. Do front-end campaigning by physically visiting the voters with or without candidate
3. Organize meetings with communities, associations and civic groups to be addressed by the candidate and other leaders
4. Bring industry associations, residents welfare associations, trade unions and other opinion makers to the party fold and make them actively support the candidate
5. Support with media and publicity to highlight achievements of BJP/Candidate locally/nationally
Please reply to - electioninternship@friendsofbjp.org
Please Note - Not all the candidates may be willing to or capable of managing these internship programs, hence placement for this internship will be on best effort basis. It is a voluntary exercise and no stipend or remuneration will be paid.
DNA article on Friends of BJP
Monday’s DNA had an article on Friends of BJP:
‘Friends of BJP’, an organisation formed to mobilise public opinion in favour of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has roped in 45,000 members within two months of its establishment.
The founder, Piyush Goyal, said that the platform will provide thought-provoking ideas to bring BJP in power.
“We have formed a few expert committees to suggest ideas. One such panel submitted its recommendations to Murli Manohar Joshi, head of BJP’s manifesto committee, and he included the same in the manifesto, which was released on Friday,” Goyal said.
‘Friends of BJP’ was formed at Goyal’s Marine Lines residence on January 28 after an informal discussion over the country’s political situation. “I was discussing politics with 30-40 friends. They were not happy with the UPA government’s performance. After much discussion, we concluded that BJP can bring change. The party is not perfect but better than the others. We decided to look at the grey and then the lighter side of the grey and our organisation came into existence,” Goyal said.
“We believe that the 30 crore urban middle class people can make a big difference if it unites. Hence we asked them to join us. Today, we have around 45,000 members, including lawyers, doctors, chartered accountants and IT professionals. We got tremendous response to the rallies held in Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Bangalore and Ahmedabad. Our website www.friendsofbjp.org gets minimum 5,000 hits every day,” Goyal said.
He asserted that the organisation will not work as the fundraiser for BJP. “Our motive is to mobilise public opinion in favour of BJP and not to collect funds for the party. We will also work as watchdog if the NDA comes into power,” he said.

For now, the Twitter channel repurposes the Feed of the new updates on the website. Any suggestions on what else we should publish on it?
Volunteer Form
We have added a Volunteer Form that you can fill in — will take no more than a couple minutes. We have some ideas that we are putting together that all of us can do in the period from now till the elections — will take us a few days to fine-tine and circulate. For now, here is an earlier document that we had published.
Going ahead, there are two primary focus areas for us: Outreach and Votes. As part of Outreach, we are focusing on three things (a) large public meetings with Arun Jaitley in multiple cities (b) smaller drawing room meetings that each of us can do (c) spreading the message via email/website/SMS/social media. As part of Votes, we need to do on the ground activities on Election Day in our neighbourhood to make sure people actually go out and vote.
More on all of these areas and specific action plans soon!
