Overview: With a population of 4,572,876 Kolkata accounts for 5.70 percent of the population of West Bengal. 100.00 percent of the population lives in towns and cities. The largest city or town in the district is Kolkata (M Corp.). Scheduled castes and scheduled tribes form 284,645 and 6.22 percent of the population respectively. |
The three largest scheduled caste groups are Namasudra, Pod and Chamar . The three largest scheduled tribe groups are Generic Tribes , Santal and Oraon.
67.95 percent of the district’s population is in the working age group of 15-59 years. The district ranks 13 among 591 districts of India in terms of proportion of population in working age group (a higher rank reflects a good performance). An inclusive growth process and employment generation have been accorded high priority in the XIth five year plan. Specific action plans need to be tailored for every district depending on the size, level of urbanization and educational attainment of the workforce.
The larger the elderly population the greater would be the need for social support for the elderly. 10.18 percent of the district’s population is over the age of 59 years.
An often used indicator to capture the extent of discrimination against the girl child is the child sex ratio. In this district, the sex ratio, i.e. the number of girls per 1000 boys, among children in the age group 0-6 years is 927. The district ranks 387 among 591 districts of India (a higher rank reflects a good performance). Ideally the sex ratio at birth should be between 943 and 954 and can be used as a thumb rule to measure the extent of gender discrimination in the district. Addressing the issue of sex selective abortion and female infanticide needs to be given high priority in districts with a sex ratio far from the norm of 943 girls per 1000 boys.

Socio-Economic Status: One aspect of living conditions in the district is the type of dwelling that households reside in. percent of households live in a temporary structure while percent of households live in semi-permanent structure. The district ranks among districts of India in terms of percentage of household living a temporary structure (a higher rank reflects a poor performance). |
An indicator of the level of deprivation in the district is the proportion of households without any of the following: radio, television, telephone, bicycle, scooter, car or a bank account. 16.8 percentage of households do not have any of the above mentioned goods and services. The district ranks 585 among 593 districts of India , in this indicator (a higher rank reflects a good performance).

Access to the outside world is important. Improved access and connectivity can contribute to improving livelihoods. As part of a poverty reduction strategy, the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana, aims at improving connectivity in rural habitations. The district ranks , , among districts of India in terms of percentage of villages having paved approach road, bus services, and post, telegraph and telephone facility.

Education and Health Outcomes: District level estimates of incidence of poverty are not available. Instead, we can examine outcomes along the following non income dimensions of well being: education and health. It is not necessary that with a decline in incidence of poverty there would be an automatic improvement along these dimensions. The reason for this is that, |
“Poverty line derived from personal consumption patterns and levels do not take into account items of social consumption such as basic education and health, drinking water supply, sanitation, environmental standards, etc. in terms of normative requirements or effective access” (p.11 Government of India 1993).

Educational Attainment: The overall literacy rate in the district is 80.86. The male and female literacy rate are respectively 83.79, 77.3. The district ranks 132 and 32 among all districts of India in terms of male and female literacy (a higher rank reflects a good performance). However, the level of literacy does not reflect educational attainment. |
The total number of years of schooling that an Indian boy or girl can expect to receive in the future is only 9.8 years. Even this average is an overestimate because of grade repetition.
India has a relatively young population. It is important to invest in improving level of educational attainment. Over the next five years, a concerted effort needs to be made to improve the number of children finishing middle school. With 12.7 percent of its population completing middle school, Kolkata ranks 13 among 590 districts of India.

The Government of India’s avowed objective is to ensure that all children go to primary school. In the event that we do achieve this target, it will be important to ensure that every village also has a middle school and a secondary school. .

Reproductive Health: Of the estimated total of 536,000 maternal deaths worldwide, in 2005, India accounted for an estimated total of 117,000 maternal deaths. The probability that a 15-year-old Indian woman will die eventually from a maternal cause is 1 in 70 as compared to 1 in 1300 in China. The Maternal Mortality Ratio in India is estimated to be 45 per 100,000 births. |
The multiple factors that contribute to the unacceptably high number of maternal deaths are viz. prevalence of marriage below the legal age, inadequate antenatal and postnatal care, and absence of skilled personnel at the time of child birth.
In Kolkata, 13.6 percent of girls marry before the legal age of 18 years. In order to tackle the problem of child marriage, in addition to compulsory registration of marriages, information and education campaigns also need to be initiated in the district.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends at least four antenatal care visits throughout the pregnancy. It is widely accepted that the number of antenatal visits by a pregnant woman determines where the woman delivers her child. In Kolkata, 91.6 percent of women made at least 3 visits for antenatal care.
The more antenatal visits, the higher the chance of the birth occurring in a health facility or in the presence of a skilled personnel. In Kolkata, 86.9 percent of women delivered in an institutional facility. It is important to increase this average. It is estimated that 52 percent of current maternal deaths worldwide can be averted by providing access to essential obstetric care.

Awareness of HIV-AIDS: The proportion of men and women aware of HIV-AIDS was 95.8, 87.5 respectively. In terms of awareness of HIV-AIDS among men Kolkata ranks 72 among the 592 districts of India and ranks 73 in terms of awareness of HIV-AIDS among women. (Higher the Rank, laser the awareness about the HIV-AIDS). |

Child Health: In Kolkata 45 percentage of children, in the age group 12-13 months received full immunization while 1.9 did not receive any immunization. The district ranks 292 in terms of percentage of children receiving full immunization (a higher rank reflects a good performance) and ranks 446 in terms of percentage of children receiving no immunization (a higher rank reflects a poor performance). |

Rural Health Infrastructure: Of the villages, 0.0 percent have a primary health centre while 0.0 percent have a primary health sub centre. Kolkata ranks 592, 592 in terms of percentage of villages having a primary health centre and primary health sub centre. |
In order to improve reproductive and child health indicators it is necessary not only to ensure that 100 percent of villages have a primary health sub centre but adequate medical supplies are available in each centre.

I have no idea as to how I got on this mailing list. I am not a voter, never have been. Moreoever, I am not a fan of the BJP.
BJP should identify leaders in every district, village, gram panchayats, municipalities,Kolkata city and build organization strength by working with common people in every area. Movements should be made to take common people in the stride by fighting for their causes at the grass root level. Farmers, labourers, poor men and the students should be inducted in the party for taking up issues affecting common people in their daily life.
Lessons must be learnt from rise of TMC in Bengal
They faught with the State Government and Left Front on issues which embarassed the Government. People found a voice for their age old aparthied.
BJP has no leadership or organization in Bengal. It has start working hard to build it now. Just stand by the side of people and fight for them. Listen to the common man and be at the spot where their rights are being attacked.
For this, leaders who are popular to common men in villages, districts and cities with honest and clean image known to have potential to work hard and toil hard should be inducted in the party.
Building a new organization cannot initiate from Air Conditioned comfort of drawing rooms in the cities. It has to start from land under the hot sun being with the people of villages and districts.

It is very essential at this point of time to vote for a party who gives national security topmost priority. After 26/11, till now no strong action has been visualized against Pakistan. We have to spread the reality to the people of WEST BENGAL as early as possible that ” The BJP is a direct successor of The Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS, Indian People’s Union), founded in 1951 by Dr.Syama Prasad Mookerjee, a nationalist leader, former Union Minister and freedom-fighter. It was considered the political wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. But the fortunes of the young party took a dip in 1953, when Mookherjee was jailed in Kashmir by then Indian Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. After his death in custody, the BJS lasted for 24 more years, but never seriously challenged the power of Indian National Congress, the only well-structured political party since India’s independence.

Can India ever hold a mega sporting event?
The Indian Premier League as a concept has been a grand success. It has caught the imagination of the country and comes at a time when people were groaning from an overdose of politics from the news channels. It was with a tinge of sadness and a sense of loss that one received the news that it was being shifted to South Africa. It is really odd to watch Chennai, Delhi, Bangalore, Rajasthan, Punjab, Calcutta, competing from far away South Africa.
All of us know the sequence of events and the causes as to why the IPL was shifted out of the country. This decision to shift abroad has “almost clubbed” India with Pakistan (where the Sri Lankan cricket team was attacked) as an unsafe sporting venue. The Home Ministry’s refusal to assure security for the high-profile Twenty-20 league has given the country a bad name. Mr.Arun Jaitley was reflecting the views of most sports lovers when he said that “The Impression which has gone is that India is not a safe destination for sporting events. Country’s activities don’t come to a standstill merely because elections are being held”. In fact, Mr.Narendra Modi the Chief Minister of Gujarat went even further. He said “The reputation of India as a safe country in the world has been shattered today by the attitude adopted by the Central Government on the security issues of IPL. It has sent a direct signal that the Indian Government is bogged down by the terrorists’ threats. It will also send the message that India is an unsafe country. The decision of the UPA government lacks farsightedness,” adding that “now the hosting of Commonwealth Games in 2010 will also come under cloud”.
The Home Minister went on to comment that the IPL is a shrewd combination of Sports and Business and there was no need to add politics to it. However, there was a selective leak of a letter by the Gujarat State police chief S S Khandawala, to discredit Mr.Narendra Modi. Immediately the Congress spokesperson said, “If not Modi, at least his police officials are concerned about the security of the people”. Of course it is another matter that the letter was one of the earlier letters written to Gujarat Cricket Association President Narhari Amin seeking clarification of dates and not the final letter by the DGP.
Now comes the news that Australia will not send its Davis Cup team to India for the next month’s tie because of security concerns. Tennis Australia has taken this decision despite knowing, the country could now face a year-long ban and a substantial fine. The Davis Cup tie was to take place in Chennai’s Nungambakkam Stadium in May. This is the same venue where the ‘Chennai Open’ has been taking place for the last several years. Mr.Chidambaram’s colossal goof up and the direct consequence of his actions is the reason for this. The Australian Davis Cup captain John Fitzgerald’s words corroborate the charge that grave injustice has been done to the image of India as a sporting nation. “We cannot send the team. It would be irresponsible of us to send our players into an area of such high risk. Davis Cup is very important to us but some things are more important than tennis,” he said. The Australian press had this to say - security in the sub-continent has been called into question following the ambush of the Sri Lanka cricket team’s bus in Lahore, Pakistan, in March. The incident triggered concerns that sports could become a target for more attacks in South Asia.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India moved the Indian Premier League ‘Twenty-20’ to South Africa after the government said “providing security would be a problem due to clash of dates with the general election”! John Fitzgerald said he was angry with the International Tennis Federation’s decision that Chennai was a safe venue and pointed to events surrounding the election that suggested security forces were being stretched.
Fitzgerald added “It is just irresponsible. Surely some thought must be given to the players’ safety. I believe they say the elections are not a cause for concern, the IPL moving is not relevant and that an ATP tournament held in January shows it is safe to play in Chennai. So what about the fact that dozens of people are being killed along the campaign trail of the election? A train was hijacked this week, but that does not alter their thoughts? Did the IPL move for no reason?”
On Saturday, April 25th, All India Tennis Association lashed out at Australia for pulling out of next month’s Davis Cup tie against India, saying they have acted in an “arrogant” and “irresponsible” manner “by creating a situation solely out of their mind and not based on facts”. The Home Minister said on Television that the Australians have decided not to come because they are scared to lose. One may have opinions about the sportsman spirit of the Australians, but any sport enthusiast will not accuse the Australians for not having competitive spirit, and therefore, the Home Minister’s observation deserve to be rubbished. In a letter sent to AITA, Tennis Australia President Geoff Pollard said that it would be irresponsible of us to send our players into an area of such high risk.
The Home Minister by not being able to provide security to the IPL, allegedly because of the General Elections in India, has sent out a message to the world that India is incapable of holding international sporting events. The repercussions of this move will be felt for a long time to come. It will take even longer to remove the perception of India being a weak state. This is probably the first instance in the world where a domestic tournament is being shifted out somewhere else.
The biggest irony of it all is that the IPL has been moved to South Africa when that country, too, is going through its General elections.

Our Chief Minister have stated proudly that there is so many muslims, i.e. minorities in our state and we want to increase the same in future and we have to need development of them with the restriction policy, i.e. 20% restriction in all ways for minorities. Your Party Leader Sitaram Yechury have stated that the God “Ram is a fictitious character”. If Ram is a fictitious character, then the parents of Mr. Yeachury do not give his Subh Name.
Many of Limited Banks do not want to give unsecured loans to specially Muslims, because more of them are uneducated and they do not want to repay the same. But our C.M. wants to give loans to only Muslims in low interest. He wants to growth of Muslims and he and his party is SECULAR.
There is some question of me about the same.
1) Are the 20/30% Muslims Indian Inhabitants, other than muslims not inhabitants of India?
2) Mr. Sitaram Yeachury have stated that “Ram is a fictitious character”. Will Mr. Yeachury have stated that the “Mohammed is a fictitious character”?
3) Sri Varun Gandhi had been arrested to speak out that With the promising of Bhagawat Gita, I state that, who wants to fight Hindus, I will cut them, although no one have taken the surety of the recorded VCD and Sri Gandhi have been released. Sri Varun Gandhi had not been wrong with us. Hindu is not any religion. Hindu is not taken from Bhagawat Gita, Upanisad, Quaran etc. there is only a religion “SANATANA” in our Bhagawat Gita. Hindu have come from the River Sindhu. The Indian territory is situated beside the river Sindhu and from then we are known as Hindu. Sindhu>Indhu>Hindu. Everybody is hindu, who lives in this territory. So Hindu is not other that Muslims, Christians etc. They are not hindu, who can not love our Mother land like Islamic terrorist, KASAB etc., who have fire crackers on the wining of PAKISTAN in the play of India-Pakistan and who want to increase their population for empowering Bengal. This is right that the political parties like CP(I)M, TMC, BJP etc. will be active, where HINDU on, without HINDU there will be no party in Bengal and then only one party like MUSLIM LEAGUE, who divided the Bengal once, will on.
Do you know, the birth of our West Bengal was made with the hand of our ever truth celebrity Sir Shyamaprasad Mukherjee, who only had fought for West Bengal and East Punjab, otherwise now the Bengal is being PAKISTAN.
4) Your party with TMC and Congress have stated that the Hindu and Muslims are brothers, blood of them are same. But if you want to write a legal declaration, there is a mandatory matter “by cast” in your declaration. You can not write by cast Indian. Why know? There is two law in our country, 1) Hindu Law, where you can not marry two times, though this is not right to marry more than one, and where you may not have more than two children in reason of growth of population., 2) Mohammedan Law, where you may marry more than one, even you may divorce easily more than one wife, where, you may have more that two children, there is no growth of population of Mohammedans. As per Mathematics, this is clear that in one generation one hindu may adopt 2 only, but one muslim may adopt 16 ( i.e. if one muslim has 4 wives and 4 children for each wife). Generally generation gap is 20 years and after 100 years one hindu may adopt 10 only, where, one muslim may adopt 80. And muslim population will growth 8 times and then we will be minorities and muslims will be on and they will demand Next Pakistan as per the times in 1947. Will you support the same?
5) As per Islam’s “Quaran” , who does not believe, support Islam Religion, they are “KAFER” i.e. anti Islam and every Islam have to given power to fight, i.e. “JEHAD” with them and in this battle every Islam may attacks, kills, rapes, outrages etc. against them i.e. anti Islam. If he is defeated and killed with this fight, he will be “SAHID” and he will go to paradise, i.e. “JANNAT”, If you do not believe the same you may read the “Quaran” and may read the statement of “The Bengali Statesman” attached herewith. Do you agree with the same? May your C.M. ban the “Quaran”? Why not?
6) Our Patriotic Celebrity Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose was establish the word “JAI HIND” and this is the national word of us. Do you explain me the word “JAI HIND”. Is this unsecular word? If HINDUTWA is unsecular, JAI HIND should be unsecular too. Is the HINDUTWA unsecular?
At last, Sri Narendra Modi is the Chief Minister of Gujrat and SWAMI VIVEKANANDA is the most favourable personality before him. I am proud that Sri Swami Vivekananda is a Bangali and the founder of Bharatiya Janasangha, Sri Shyamaprasad Mukherjee, son of Bengal Tiger Sir Ashutosh Mukherjee, is a Bangali and Sri Prabhu Pad, the founder of International Society of Krishna Consiousness, is a Bangali and overall Our National Leader Sri Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose is a Bangali.
But there is no pictures of our National Heroes like state aforesaid in your Party Office. The pictures of Lenin, Marxs are in the wall of your party office, very shame to us. Please hang out the Lenin, Marx, Comrade and find out the Nationalist Freedom. Join only BHARATIYA JANATA PARTY, India’s one and only nationalist party. When BJP moves to make Ram temple, all secularists like Congress,CPI,CPI(M),SP etc.etc.began to cry more than Muslims & made all possible steps and movements to stop this. Then how, BJP can make the temple peacefully. I am very much depressed after the result of the election. I feel that we have to work from grass root level to make our organization strong. Common middle class people should be influenced if we do protest on ‘increasing price of everyday utilities’.

Also there is need to bring more youth in the party so that it can gain the votes of below 35 groups.Rajnath Singh should resign as president and Sushma ji should become the leader of opposition.The BJP ruled states should start various development projects and should look after the welfare of the needy.The congress won the election on development agenda not on religion basis.So i appeal to the top brass to please start right now the vision 2014 and regain its lost glory and the golden period under Sri Atal Ji.
The BJP should try and go all alone in U.P,Haryana,Bihar ,Orissa and should focus on the Norrth East right now and it should not depend on leaders like Mayawatis,Jaylalitas and the Chautalas who have no political credibility.
I as a supporter of bjp request to all Indians especially the youths to please support the BJP because it is the only party which has proven that it cannot compromise on national security,development programmes but still fails to form the government.we indians actually get fooled by the Nehrus,Gandhis and becomes emotional and soft towards them and ultimately votes for them forgetting about their past misdeeds which is now making our country suffer badly
Bring more and more muslim faces in BJP and appoint Sri Shanawaz Hussain as the head of minority cell because he is young,possess clean image,courageous and lastly he can keep his cool under difficult circumstances.The BJP should give the important portfolios to Shanawaz ji,Sushma ji,Arun Ji and other young leaders and should immediately get rid of Rajnath Singh.Sri Advani ji should still be with the party to groom upcoming leaders and make it in a position to go all alone in any elections.Lastly my personal opinion is that the BJP lost because of the poor planning and the communication gap created by Rajnath Singh.
